Lesson Summary

This lesson teaches students about the chemistry of combustion with a particular focus on the emission of smoke and the creation of black carbon, soot, and tar balls, as well as some of the impacts of combustion emissions in the environment (with a focus on birds).

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to: 

  • describe the chemistry of combustion.
  • describe the chemical structure of soot, black carbon, and tar balls.
  • explain some impacts of combustion emissions on our environment.
  • explain how scientists can use proxy measurements to understand our world.
